Pheidippides was a hemerodrime - a runner. That was his job. When he was sent in 490BC to Sparta to gather reinforcements he carried the weight of a people on his shoulders as they faced extinction at the hands of the Persian invaders. Much to consider as he picked his way down the paths and through the olive groves.
